NTGreek Lessons > Phonology > Lesson 1: See & Hear Pī
1. Pī is the sixteenth letter in the Greek alphabet.
2. Pī is a labial unvoiced consonant. When the phoneme is pronounced, the lips are closed and the vocal cords do NOT
vibrate. You can test this by putting your fingers on your vocal cords and practice saying the phoneme.
3. Pī's phoneme sounds like the "p" as in "party."
4. Pī's upper and lower case letters are identically written, except the capital letter is twice as high as
its corresponding small letter.
5. Pī is transliterated into English as "P" or "p." Care must be exercised not to confuse the English consonant
"P/p" with the Greek consonant "P/p" (rhō).
