NTGreek Lessons > Phonology > Lesson 1: See & Hear Mū
1. Mū is the twelth eleventh letter in the Greek alphabet.
2. Mū's phoneme sounds like the "m" as in "man."
3. Mū is a voiced nasal labial. It is also considered as a continuant consonant. Its phoneme is formed by the rounding
of the lips and most of the sound allowed to pass through the nasal cavity instead of the mouth. Since the consonant is voiced, the vocal cords vibrate
while saying the phoneme. You can test this by putting your fingers on your vocal cords and practice saying it.
4. Mū's capital letter is written exactly like the English "M." The lower case letter has a tail which distinguishes
it from upsīlon.
5. Mū is transliterated into English as "M" or "m."
