NTGreek Lessons > Phonology > Lesson 1: See & Hear Epsīlon
1. Epsīlon is the fifth letter in the Greek alphabet.
2. Epsīlon is a voiced vowel as are all vowels. Its phoneme is formed with the mouth almost closed. The vocal cords
vibrate as the phoneme is uttered. You can test this by putting your fingers on your vocal cords and practice saying the phoneme.
3. Epsīlon's upper case letter is identical to its English counterpart and may be formed with two strokes.
The lower case letter may be written with one stroke without lifting the pen from the paper. Be sure consciously to differentiate between the lower case
English "e" and the Greek epsīlon while writing it.
4. Epsīlon is transliterated into English as "E" or "e."
