NTGreek Lessons > Phonology > Lesson 1: See & Hear Bēta
1. Bēta is the second letter in the Greek alphabet.
2. Bēta is a voiced labial consonant. Its phoneme is formed by the closure of the lips. The vocal cords vibrate as the phoneme is uttered. You can test this by putting your
fingers on your vocal cords and practice saying the phoneme.
3. Bēta's upper case letter is identically written to its English counterpart. The lower case letter looks similar to its upper case letter, except that it has a tail
that drops below the base line. When practicing writing the lower case letter, begin with an upward stroke below the line, completing the entire character with one stroke without
lifting the pen from the paper.
4. Bēta is transliterated into English as "B" or "b."
